Description

Welcome to Patricia Briggs’s world, a place where “witches, vampires, werewolves, and shape-shifters live beside ordinary people” (Booklist). It takes a very unusual woman to call it home—and there’s no one quite like Mercy Thompson.

By day, Mercy Thompson is a car mechanic in the sprawling Tri-Cities of Eastern Washington. By night, she explores her preternatural side. As a shape-shifter with some unusual talents, Mercy’s found herself maintaining a tenuous harmony between the human and the not-so-human on more than one occasion. This time she may get more than she bargained for.

Marsilia, the local vampire queen, has learned that Mercy crossed her by slaying a member of her clan—and she’s out for blood. But since Mercy is protected from direct reprisal by the werewolf pack (and her close relationship with its sexy Alpha), it won’t be Mercy’s blood Marsilia is after.

It’ll be her friends’.

I really like how Ms. Briggs confronts European magic with Native American magic. This fertile vein will provide many wonderful stories and I want to read them all.

Awesome story - Mercy is just learning about her legacy and learning how to connect with Adam without giving up who she is and what she values

I enjoyed reading mercy’s adventures. Thank god she leaves them alive. But overall it’s a great story and I’m glad she finally accepts being pack. Love Adam and love Stephan.

This book, is the best so far in the series. All are (5) STARS but this one is (5) stars PLUS!!! The dialogue is very emotionally raw, yet so real. Patricia Briggs is simply at the top of all authors, especially those of this genre. I recommend reading them in order, so u can appreciate how these main characters develop and the complexities of Mercy life evolve. She is one KICK-BUTT CHICK, and super smart as well. Another MUST read! Can’t wait for her next near death adventure/rescue. Uncle J. 68.

I didn’t like the opening section of the book. It was not something she was ready for, granted, and the reaction seems fine. However, she’s been playing coy for a long time, and now she decides to jump and then puts it on hold. In many ways, I would have been much happier if the opening section had been put whole into the previous novel, and that is my biggest beef with this one. However realistic this may be, it’s leaving the guy in a holding pattern that seems set to continue for quite a while, and has been going for several years before. This helps keep the rating PG, leaves a nice thread open for later development, but is fundamentally unsatisfying on one axis. I’m sure romance readers will eat the tension up, but there’s a reason I’m not big on standard romance tropes. That said, the actual story is pretty good, and she does come back and reapproach the issue. And I appreciate both very much. One of the big differences between this and Batman (I mean Dresden Files), is that the protagonist isn’t really well prepared going into a problem and finds things out on the fly. While for Harry, he prepares as best he can and then it all explodes in his face anyway. (Until he comes back later in the series.)

First werewolves, then vampires, then fae, now ghosts. Briggs keeps bringing fresh ideas and a fresh story to this fantastic series. The characters continue to grow and develop, especially Mercy in light of the events at the end of Iron Kissed (Book 3). This book presents a new challenge for Mercy and at the same time sees a resolution to a looming threat. Briggs does an excellent job of integrating the two main story lines as well as continuing to develop the relationship between Mercy and both Adam and Samuel. Many series fall into a formula by the fifth book, but Briggs keeps delivering fresh, new, exciting stories.
