This is a phenomenally well-written and griping book with one major flaw. At the end, the cops knew that Helene had been at a bar when her child was kidnapped. Why was social services not on top of this mother? An earlier statement in the book that it was all but impossible to get a kid removed from an abusive home does not address the fact that there a whole range of services that will be put in place short of removing a child. The courts would ave had Helene on a short leash.
