I did enjoy insight this book provides on our first presidents life. I didn’t care for his choice of words used throughout the book. It made it hard to follow and took the joy out of reading it.

Good biography and quite well researched and presented. It is sometimes difficult and slow to read all the correspondence with cumbersome language

After reading Titan, I searched for other biographies by Chernow. Thank you for making Washington come alive and painting an honest picture.

A superior biography that makes GW come alive as a person.

This ranks as one of the best biographies I have read. Rich in detail that portrays a complex character. It is neither hyper-critical nor fawning, but illustrates a complex character living through turbulent time. This is why biographies are timely. Historians can help us understand the short-sidedness of assessing current events and people as bi-dimensional when humans and their experience are far more complex. This book is not an easy read to reaffirm your notions of this popular yet largely unknown historical figure. You need to allow sufficient time while reading to embrace the historical period and appreciate the other actors in this drama to fully comprehend the genious of George Washington and his monumental patience to allow a nation and new political philosophy to be born. It is recommended reading for gaining perspective on the characters of our own turbulent times.
  • Excellent biography of our first president

Excellent and compelling. Extremely readable. Captures the dignity and complexity of the man, and reveals the nastiness he dealt with as President. Highly recommend.

After reading Chernow's "Hamilton", I had to read his "Washington". Fantastic blend of history with bringing all these characters to life. As a history lover, some books I have slogged through...too many dates and places. These books made you understand their personalities, motives, and current events of the 18th century. Wow.
