WATCH WILL TRENT ON ABC • This edition features an introduction on the origins of the Will Trent novels

In the trauma center of Atlanta’s busiest hospital, Sara Linton treats the city’s poor, wounded, and unlucky—and finds refuge from the tragedy that rocked her life in rural Grant County. But then a tortured young woman becomes a patient in her ER. . . .

In the backwoods of suburban Atlanta, where Sara’s patient was found, local police have set up their investigation. But Georgia Bureau of Investigation detective Will Trent doesn’t wait for the go-ahead from his boss—he plunges through police lines, single-handedly exposing a hidden house of horror buried beneath the earth . . . and then finds another victim.

Wresting the case away from the local police chief, Will and his partner, Faith Mitchell, are called into a related investigation. Another woman—a smart, upscale, independent young mother—has been snatched. For the two cops out on the hunt, for the doctor trying to bring her patient back to life, the truth hits like a hammer: The killer’s torture chamber has been found, but the killer is still at work.

With Undone, Karin Slaughter weaves together the moving, powerful human stories of three unforgettable characters from her New York Times bestselling novels Faithless and Fractured, who collide for the first time in an electrifying race against the clock—and a duel with unspeakable human evil.

I love the characters in the series and the concept behind this story. I do find; however, that the writing includes too much expository text and lines like 'he knew that....'. Often it seems like this writing style assumes the reader won't make the jump and needs clarification. While I typically don't need it, if necessary, there are cleaner more thoughtful ways to include those bits of information. In spite of all this, I keep reading, passing over paragraphs or sometimes pages of extraneous or laborious text describing one of the characters feelings about something or overworked prose about surroundings. The characters seem to make it worth it. On to the next in the series.

I have to mimic one of Slaughter’s reviewers: I’d follow her anywhere. I love her stories, and this book is another example of the style, tension, tenderness that I love about them :)

From a review in Costco magazine, I learned the author Karin Slaughter grew up in the suburban area where I went to High School. So that was my hook and I am glad for it. I thoroughly enjoyed the engaging full character development and the many back details supporting the plot line. However the wrap up solution to the plot left me rather flat and unbelieving. Guess that is a bad UN.

Overall well plotted with enough suspense to hold my interest. As with all the Trent series, it is not believable that someone as severely dyslexic as Trent would have been hired as a detective. Barely able to read or follow simple directions such as "Go left" or "Go right," Trent cannot perform his duties independently. No matter how intelligent he is, he would be a liability to his partner and to himself. Perhaps there would be a role in law enforcement for someone like Trent, just not as a detective. In this book we learn that Trent's partner, Faith Mitchell is not only pregnant, but also suffers from Type 2 diabetes. I have to question whether a person with her chronic disease would be certified for active duty such as detective. It seemed a needless complication that Slaughter chose to introduce this into the plot. Also, Slaughter spends too much time on the personal problems of two of her lead characters. This is a mystery/detective novel, not a romance. That said, the twists and turns of the story line kept me reading and I look forward to Slaughter's next book.
