There are two separate stories in this book. The second story, The Sport of Destiny, is a story of political intrigue and career climbing. The main story, The Apparitionist, is very interesting, but seems unfinished. (It actually is unfinished. I looked it up at Wikipedia: "Although it remained unfinished, its audiences were the largest for any of Schiller's work during his lifetime". )
