Description

Jeff Goins dismantles the myth that being creative is a hindrance to success by revealing how an artistic temperament is a competitive advantage in the marketplace.?

The myth of the starving artist has dominated our culture, seeping into the minds of creative people and stifling their pursuits. The truth is that the world's most successful artists did not starve. In fact, they capitalized on the power of their creative strength.

In Real Artists Don't Starve, bestselling author and creativity expert Jeff Goins debunks the myth of the starving artist by unveiling the ideas that created it and replacing them with 14 rules for artists to thrive, including:
Steal from your influences (don't wait for inspiration)Collaborate with others (working alone is a surefire way to starve)Take strategic risks (instead of reckless ones)Make money in order to make more art (it's not selling out)Apprentice under a master (a "lone genius" can never reach full potential)
From graphic designers and writers to artists and business professionals, creatives already know that no one is born an artist. Goins' revolutionary rules celebrate the process of becoming an artist, a person who utilizes the imagination in fundamental ways. He reminds creatives that business and art are not mutually exclusive pursuits.

Real Artists Don't Starve explores the tension every creative person and organization faces in an effort to blend the inspired life with a practical path to success. Being creative isn't a disadvantage for success, it is a powerful tool to be harnessed.

I really enjoyed this book for the most part and got a lot of actionable advice and inspiration from it. I've recommended it to several artist friends who are in different stages of their careers. WARNING THOUGH. This is not an issue with the book but with iBook: I saw that an update was available for the book so I updated it, but after doing so my many valued highlights and notes were completely messed up and inaccessible. 😒

When I started out as a writer and speaker, I felt that I would make little money doing it. As I read into Jeff's work and this book, I came to the conclusion, you make what you want to. If you want to be broke, you made that choice. What I really like about Jeff is he puts the ball in your court. He says here's the way I walked, your's may look different but I'm paying my bills and creating more art. To sum this review up, of your wondering whether to buy or not, here's why I bought the book. First, I know I'm supposed to write, so I must become teachable with other writers. Second, when decide to invest in others work you reap the same for yourself. Third, when you celebrate other artists/creatives/writers you will one day be celebrated. So if your in, celebrate with Jeff in this amazing book he poured his heart into!

Jeff Goins does an amazing job dispelling the myth of the starving artist. If you're anything like me, you peruse around books about creatives in hopes of finding the answers you're searching for to help starting your creative career just find people talking AROUND the issues in vague phrases… well this book will put an end to your search! Jeff gives you rules, steps, and explains the reasons why you need to put them into action immediately. It clearly paints an image of what to do and what not to do. If you are a creative, more often than not you're a bit stubborn too. This book will challenge your views, but if you read it with an open mind, I promise you will not be disappointed!
