Charles Spurgeon remarked, "Personally, I have to bless God for many good books; I thank Him for Dr. Doddridge’s Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul."
Philip Doddridge (1702-1751) was an English noncomforist author and hymnwriter. He included Isaac Watts among his circle of friends.
His Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul was translated into seven languages and was the book that eventually led to anti-slavery activist William Wilberforce's conversion.
