Description

Amber applies a dash of red lipstick and checks herself out in the mirror before heading out on a date. ‘Don’t wait up!’ she calls to her housemates as she leaves. But Amber never returns home that night. Amber Slater is never seen again.

The last person to see Amber was her housemate. He remembers everything she was wearing that night. He watched her leave. He listened to every word of her phone conversation with her friend before she left. He knows more about Amber’s movements than anyone.

At university, she is well-liked by her fellow students and teachers. Her tutor’s voice shakes when he is questioned by the police. Some say he and Amber were very close. Too close. Some say his wife had just found out about their relationship.

The manager at the restaurant where Amber was supposed to eat that night says she didn’t show up. Yet the chef at the restaurant is overly chatty about her. He wasn’t working that night. He wasn’t answering his phone. Nobody knows where he was when Amber went missing.

Rumours begin to circulate about Amber, it seems that everyone has a story to tell. But when the young girl’s lifeless body is found in a local park, with her blue lips glued shut, the gossip suddenly goes quiet. As the police trace the last few hours of Amber’s life, it seems that the girl simply vanished on her way to catch her bus. And when another woman goes missing in the dead of night, it’s a race against time to find her before she too is silenced forever.

  • I want more of this series!

I was crushed when I found out I had read the last book in this series. The stories all contain a nice balance of hard science, criminal law, humanity & humor... even a smudge or two of low key (believable) sex/romance. This is fairly rare, I've found.. I wish that there were fewer typos in the e-books.. apostrophes where they don't belong, for instance: "They were great friend's".. I understand why this happens; it's just distracting. It prevents my getting lost in the story. My hat is off to Carla K!

My Review: Another great read by the fabulous Carla Kovach. It was very intense and had me guessing the whole way through. Yes, this is a series but all the books can be read as stand alones. No, it doesn’t take away from the it if you read them out order. I’ve read almost all this series out of order and I had no problems with it. The only good thing about reading these in order is you get to see the growth in each character as the series progresses. In fact, my favorite thing about this series is the characters and yes that includes the bad guys. The way this author writes and describes her characters is so in depth. She makes you feel that you are right there with each and every character. Some of these characters I know so much about that they could be my best friend in real life. This is how a book should make you feel. You should feel like you are in the middle of all of the drama. If an author does this then it means that they are doing their job right. Ok, on to the book itself. As usual with this series the plot was interesting and it captivated me the entire time. Time literally stopped while I was reading this one. When I started this the sun was up shining bright and by the time I finished all I saw was the dark light of the moon. I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next. I was racing through the chapters like there was no tomorrow. Now lets talk about that heart attack of an ending. There were so many twists and turns that I was speechless. I had no clue what shocking thing was going to happen next. This whole book was dark and evil, just the way I like it. I was so scared to walk alone or be alone after reading this one.,Carla Kovach you are the best and I can’t wait to read another book by you. In conclusion, the plot, the characters and all the twists in this book made this book an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  • British police procedural that kept me guessing

This is the eighth book in the Gina Harte series, and the first one I’ve had the pleasure of reading. When the body of a young woman is found in a lake, Gina and her team are called in to investigate. The story is told from several points of view, including the detective and the killer, and is was really effective at keeping me guessing as to which of the suspects was the murderer. I enjoyed the writing style, the author has obviously done her homework in researching police procedure, and found the portrayal of Gina and her team realistic. Gina’s strength in leading her team, while having doubts about her personal life make her a likable lead. I will definitely be reading this series from the start, and have already signed up for the authors emails to be kept updated on future books. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this introduction to this great series.

Another British crime novel for me. They never get old because they are all so good. This is my first Gina Harte novel by Carla Kovach, but it won’t be my last. This is the 8th book in the series and I had no trouble following along without being caught up in reading the series. Gina Harte, or Guv as her team calls her, is hunting a murderer. A young college age girl is found dead in the park. The book focuses on catching her killer. There are chapters from his victims, his point of view and Gina’s. I like when you get to see the story unfold from many angles. And can I mention there is no shortage of suspects. At one point I even wondered if her team was all vetted and if they could be part of it. Slowly all of the suspects end up being eliminated so you can figure out the villain. There is suspense and danger in this fast paced novel as Gina and her team rush to solve the case before more people are hurt. The author does a good job in developing a believable crime and has a diverse group of characters. And she is great at red herrings for even smaller plot points as you read the story. I recommend this for anyone looking for a well thought out crime drama
