Description

J.R.R. Tolkien's classic prelude to his Lord of the Rings trilogy...

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum.

Written for J.R.R. Tolkien's own children, The Hobbit has sold many millions of copies worldwide and established itself as a modern classic.

Like a lot of people I was drawn to these books from the Peter Jackson live action movies of the original Lord of the Rings. Whatever version I originally read was awful and made we put off the series for a long time. Eventually a co-worker of mine recommended that I start with The Hobbit instead as it was a bit easier to digest and slowly ease my way into the series. This I recommend for everyone. Start with this version and then go to the following books. It explains some backstory stuff as well.

Tolkien is a delight to read, especially for readers who pace naturally and visualize eagerly. It can be read through if your determined out you can read a bit and pause and think and both are very rewarding methods of reading this book. While not as serious in tone as his other works it is just a grand and beautiful!
