Description

The first novel in the New York Times bestselling Lost Fleet series!

The Alliance has been fighting the Syndics for a century—and losing badly. Now its fleet is crippled and stranded in enemy territory. Their only hope is a man who's emerged from a century-long hibernation to find he has been heroically idealized beyond belief....

Captain John “Black Jack” Geary’s exploits are known to every schoolchild. Revered for his heroic “last stand” in the early days of the war, he was presumed dead. But a century later, Geary miraculously returns and reluctantly takes command of the Alliance Fleet as it faces annihilation by the Syndics.

Appalled by the hero-worship around him, Geary is nevertheless a man who will do his duty. And he knows that bringing the stolen Syndic hypernet key safely home is the Alliance’s one chance to win the war. But to do that, Geary will have to live up to the impossibly heroic “Black Jack” legend....

  • Great concept, weak characters

The worldbuilding here is great, with a historical hero thrust into a new challenge. The characters are a little flat, with little development through the (short) book. The moves are all a little obvious, and the stakes seem low. I’d be very interested to see where this goes.

There’s nothing like some good military sci-fi to sink your teeth into. Loaded with space combat, good character development, Jack Campbell knows how to use his physics to the nth degree to not only keep you intrested in the battles themselves but to exploit his characters to tell a good story. If your somenoe looking for some space opera that’s skeweed a little more on the hard sci-fi, or just has a handle on their world building, this is the book for you. :)

This book is not only engaging and entertaining, it is superbly well thought out. I love that the author actually knows and employs his physics. How such colossal distances, relativistic effects and extreme speeds affect every aspect of storytelling, especially battles, makes a story more plausible. And these affects are described in ways that can be easily understood. Great book!

I got this book for free from iTunes a couple of years ago, read it, enjoyed it, went to read it again and it didn't show in my library. I'm not complaining though. I baught it and am reading it again. If you like space heros this is your book!

Decently written, but lacks the depth and breadth of classic sf.

This book starts in the middle of a climatic battle and the tension does not let up from there. This is an amazing read--it has space combat, interesting characters, a well developed plot in an easy to read format. I found the author had great ways of keeping the reader interested while advancing the story in new and innovative ways throughout. The only bad thing I can think of is that if you buy this book plan on buying the next five in the series because they are all just as good. I have not regretted purchasing this book and enjoy rereading the entire series frequently--do yourself a favor and get immersed in the Lost Fleet universe.

This book was an easy read with a simple plot line that was fairly predictable while still being entertaining. I'm going to read the next book in the series although I am not yet committed to reading the entire series. This isn't Star Wars...
