Description

Game of Thrones fans will love the New York Times bestselling Abhorsen series. Sabriel, the first installment in the trilogy, launched critically acclaimed author Garth Nix onto the fantasy scene as a rising star.

Dark Secrets, Deep Love, and Dangerous Magic

Sent to a boarding school in Ancelstierre as a young child, Sabriel has had little experience with the random power of Free Magic or the Dead who refuse to stay dead in the Old Kingdom. But during her final semester, her father, the Abhorsen, goes missing, and Sabriel knows she must enter the Old Kingdom to find him. She soon finds companions in Mogget, a cat whose aloof manner barely conceals its malevolent spirit, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage long imprisoned by magic, now free in body but still trapped by painful memories.

As the three travel deep into the Old Kingdom, threats mount on all sides. And every step brings them closer to a battle that will pit them against the true forces of life and death—and bring Sabriel face-to-face with her own destiny.

“Sabriel is a winner, a fantasy that reads like realism. Here is a world with the same solidity and four-dimensional authority as our own, created with invention, clarity and intelligence.” —Philip Pullman, author of His Dark Materials trilogy

This story is an amazing read! It’s a great one to have for when you are figuring out what to eat next, or you just want an adventure. The audio books of this are equally amazing with Tim Curry narrating.
  • Garth Nix is a genius!

This story is completely original and somehow still so familiar? The concept of death as a river is pretty common but the way it is written here is just perfect! Nix doesn’t spend any time building the world, he just launches into the story and it is so believable from the first word even though the setting, magic system, and history are completely new. The writing is so effective in keeping the plot moving while still painting this beautiful new world along the way! Probably my favorite book. Should be a classic and I believe everyone should read it.

It makes me quite happy to see all the other glowing reviews here for this amazing book. Each of them is warranted, because this book is that rare book that is so compelling and well-written that you can't put it down, the first read-through or the fifth. I would give it six stars if I could.

An amazing childhood memory I've recently revisited as I read chapters to my wife before we go to bed. Every bit as poignant and engaging as it was in my childhood, Sabriel is a rare treat in a genre that no longer respects it's young readers with mature themes or complex characters.

This was my favorite book from childhood and remains so. I just finished rereading it after what i want to say is 12 years. I was afraid that time would have lessened the effects this story had on me previously but that was not the case. It was my favorite then and remains so now.
