A lot of authors temp their readers into a series by offering the first book for free. This series was one such as that. I almost never continue, and I didn’t for a year or so, but the first book in this series kept niggling at me and I kept thinking about Amy and wondering how she got on. So finally I thought, “This is ridiculous, if you’re still thinking about this character you obviously want to read the next book. Just buy it!” So I did. I devoured the second story and didn’t even think two minutes about buying the third. It was very satisfying for Amy to finally have some peace and closure in her life, but although you could see certain things coming you weren’t sure how they would happen. Just bought the sequel. I want to continue with the adventure.

I read all three books although the amount of domestic abuse she writes of was harrowing. I’m not sure why she made it such a theme of this story.

An engaging, sweet-hearted time period piece which caught and kept my attention throughout. The characters were well developed and the personalities were diverse and consistent to themselves. What a pleasure to involve myself in their lives and histories. Thank you for the lovely resolution for Amy and Ann. Perhaps Lizzie could have enjoyed Amy's celebration. (I'd have LOVED to learn of Susannah's reaction to find the 'cast-off' child to be so learned too, but THAT is my own issue😉). Many thanks to the author for her good story outline and development. A pleasure to have read tis series.

Fabulous series set in New Zealand over 100 years ago. I couldn't put it down. Very realistic, with historical facts about the time period. Absolutely fascinating and highly recommended.

I picked up "Sentence of Marriage" and read straight through "Mud and Gold" and "Settling the Account" - non stop. I haven't done that with a author in 20 years or so. The characters became so real to me I couldn't bear to not know what happened next. I did find, though, that the number of children and the speed in which they came was confusing. It seemed that the children grew up faster than the parents aged / or not. Especially Amy. I didn't make a time line but I am sure her age is not right in several places. One of Lizzie's children is born after a 3 year break, but all the other children did not seem to get older in a corresponding way.... In the end this does not have a major disruption to the true story. An excellent saga from beginning to end.
