Description

Now the subject of the Lifetime original movie, An Amish Murder

Sworn to Silence is the first in Linda Castillo's New York Times bestselling Kate Burkholder series.

A KILLER IS PREYING ON SACRED GROUND....

In the sleepy rural town of Painters Mill, Ohio, the Amish and “English” residents have lived side by side for two centuries. But sixteen years ago, a series of brutal murders shattered the peaceful farming community. In the aftermath of the violence, the town was left with a sense of fragility, a loss of innocence. Kate Burkholder, a young Amish girl, survived the terror of the Slaughterhouse Killer but came away from its brutality with the realization that she no longer belonged with the Amish.

Now, a wealth of experience later, Kate has been asked to return to Painters Mill as chief of police. Her Amish roots and big city law enforcement background make her the perfect candidate. She’s certain she’s come to terms with her past—until the first body is discovered in a snowy field. Kate vows to stop the killer before he strikes again. But to do so, she must betray both her family and her Amish past—and expose a dark secret that could destroy her.

I’m not really sure what this book was trying to be. There’s a shoe-horned in romance side plot that doesn’t get the attention it deserves. There are a series of murders that the main character is trying to solve, but the reader does not get enough info throughout the book to even have an idea of who could have done the crimes. The reader figured out who did these crimes at the same time as the main character. The main character is kind of annoying and is constantly engaging in clunky, awkward inner monologues explaining the backgrounds of certain characters. This book isn’t horrible but I wouldn’t read another of these.

This was the first Linda Castillo, Sheriff Kate Burkholder book I read. Received it as a free book from Goodreads for a review. Now, many books later, I am still hooked and can’t wait for the next one to be published!

  • Somewhat entertaining but why so gory?

This is definitely a beach read. In other words, very mediocre writing and quite formulaic. I have no idea why the murders must be so gruesome and the descriptions of the crime scenes so luridly detailed. I don’t know why, but I purchased a second audiobook and it’s almost identical to the first one. Its only saving grace is the romance between Kate and John, but the author didn’t give us enough of that. If you like horrific murders and unbelievable plots, this is the book for you.

I've been wanting to try a book by Ms. Castillo. The Silence series went on sale; so I picked them up. This is the first book in the series. The author had me from the very first chapter. I love a good mystery. Ms. castillo is now definitely an author I will look forward to reading again. I usually wait until a book goes on sale before trying a new author. Now I'm sorry I waited so long. I am looking forward to the rest of this series. Ms. castillo does a very good job with character development. Which is the most important attribute of a good author. Try it; you won't be sorry!
