Description

An Apple Books Classic edition.
Charles Dickens’ classic explores potent themes like good versus evil, crime, repentance, love and betrayal. At the center of the story is Pip, an impoverished orphan who dreams of a better life. When a mysterious benefactor gifts Pip a substantial fortune, he’s rescued from a life of deprivation and abuse-and introduced to a memorable host of characters: the bizarre Miss Havisham, a wealthy heiress who was spurned at the altar; her cold, austere ward Estella, who eventually breaks Pip’s heart; and an escaped convict who teaches Pip that people aren’t always what they seem.

Dickens’ novel-which was originally serialized in a weekly newspaper-contains major plot twists at every turn, which accounts for its enduring popularity. It’s a gripping read and a thrilling portrait of Victorian England.

I would not read this again. It is brilliantly written and I am glad I read it, Dickens disillusions the pursuit of wealth and status more effectively than any other. The making of this point so well required quite a miserable (though he did not realize it) protagonist, and his misery made it a long disheartening read. However I would recommend it to anyone and I think it is an essential read.

I wish I liked it more! But it was long and boring in so many parts. I liked the lessons and morals it was trying to teach.

I haven’t read many of Dickens books and I think I’ve been missing a lot. As I read the book I felt it had really no former plan for the story and he just ingeniously wrote as his thoughts led him. He was an amazing author as we all know. I will read more of his books. This book was the clincher.

One of my favorite books of all time! Even in the past, existed real life issues. Everything comes full circle with time. This story is a masterpiece!

Told in the first person, this suspenseful, amazing tale evinces the terrible ways that adults abuse, manipulate, and distort the lives of innocent children in their power. Led astray into the clutches of a spectral old hag, poor Pip sees his “great expectations” evaporate - and ends a bachelor! Dickens is the best- addictive!

A great story with elements to satisfy every reader-adventure, mystery, sadness, joy and surprises. Dickens weaves all these into a journey with a timeless universal truth.

Too boring with a spice of I-do-not-see-women and women are merely objects . I liked the Shakespearean era tho
