The entire series is absolutely fascinating, I read all of them a decade ago or so. I read some of them twice. A peek under the tent of how politics, power and people come together- one lesson is that things haven’t changed over the decades since the events described in the series occurred. Graft, corruption, self serving decisions and describes LBJ as a man, full of ideals and principles and motivations, highs and lows, accomplishments and shortcomings. I feel like I know the man perhaps better than he knew himself. This series was and remains the most interesting, informative and entertaining look at how the system works. At the time I believed that this was then, today things are different. They are not. Worth every minute, highly recommended.
  • An amazing piece of biography and history

Reading this book, one is astounded at the author's depth of knowledge and the research that went into this. A must read about LBJ but also about Texas and New Deal era politics

The soil wasn't good for much of anything. The trees that did grow, yielded little but the ache of backbreaking labor. The day began and ended with the sun. And then there was electricity, which changed everything. This, then, is the beginning of the story of LBJ. Son of Texas politics and a character as immutable as the place and time that formed him. He was crass, charming, brilliant and deeply flawed. A master politician and a power broker, nearly unrivaled in the course of American history. Caro brings LBJ to us in full, nearly unbelievable color, much in the same way he did Robert Moses in his first book, and as a story teller, has no peer. Great, engaging read. Enjoy.
