Description

LEGENDARY founding KISS drummer Peter “Catman” Criss has lived an incredible life in music, from the streets of Brooklyn to the social clubs of New York City to the ultimate heights of rock ’n’ roll success and excess.

KISS formed in 1973 and broke new ground with their elaborate makeup, live theatrics, and powerful sound. The band emerged as one of the most iconic hard rock acts in music history. Peter Criss, the Catman, was the heartbeat of the group. From an elevated perch on his pyrotechnic drum riser, he had a unique vantage point on the greatest rock show of all time, with the KISS Army looking back at him night after night.

Peter Criscuola had come a long way from the homemade drum set he pounded on nonstop as a kid growing up in Brooklyn in the fifties. He endured lean years, street violence, and the rollercoaster music scene of the sixties, but he always knew he’d make it. Makeup to Breakup is Peter Criss’s eye-opening journey from the pledge to his ma that he’d one day play Madison Square Garden to doing just that. He conquered the rock world—composing and singing his band’s all-time biggest hit, “Beth” (1976)—but he also faced the perils of stardom and his own mortality, including drug abuse, treatment in 1982, near-suicides, two broken marriages, and a hard-won battle with breast cancer.

Criss opens up with a level of honesty and emotion previously unseen in any musician’s memoir. Makeup to Breakup is the definitive and heartfelt account of one of rock’s most iconic figures, and the importance of faith and family. Rock ’n’ roll has been chronicled many times, but never quite like this.

Wow, Cat, you went all out. I’ve read some musicians’ autobiographies before, but this is unparalleled! The inside scoop on unquestionably the world’s most fascinating band. Great job, Catman!!!
  • THE ONE AND ONLY Peter Criss hits it out of the ballpark.

Excellent book that finally tells the truth about KISS. This book is a must have - Peter did a great job as always. KISS is nothing without Peter on drums and Ace on lead guitar.

Another perspective in the KISS autobiographies. Peter's may be the most passionate. But not the most honest.

When I was a kid, my older brother and cousin would dress up with makeup as Kiss and put their music on 8 track and play along on tennis rackets... So naturally Kiss was something I discovered and as I got older learned more about the group and really loved their earlier records. There just will not be the real KISS without Peter and Ace. Peter was my favorite and it's amazing to read this book as a fan, being in a band myself I can totally relate to the eye opening revelations in this book as to how the music industry works and trying to deal and cope with other members of a band. If you are a music fan whatsoever you will Love this book, and if you are a KISS fan you will really LOVE this book. I find it ironic and true justice that Peter's book is the most successful out of everyone's and by far the best. I can't recommend this book enough.

Good book. But Peter is a bit of a cry baby. I was I was making twenty grand a gig. And he always makes himself out to be the victim.

I loved reading this book. It tells a story of a rock n roll icon you went from rags to riches. The ups and downs and all the BS that he had to put up with certain band members. It really opens your eyes about the KISS organization and it members. It tells an interesting story how fame and fortune can change certain KISS members from nice to not so nice. Great book for any KISS fan and rock n roll fan.

A great insight from another point of view. Peter goes in depth into the band and into his personal life while on the road. I have read Ace and Gene's books and it is amazing what details you learn in this book about how fame, money, life on the road and greed can destroy a band. I could not stop reading! God bless Peter Criss!

After so many years of being a kiss fan, hearing so many spins on the goings on with the band, it's so great and sad to hear the story told with honesty and boldness. Thank you Peter for sharing your heart and life with us throughout all the years. I've read both genes and aces books and I now have read yours. And it rocks! I am sorry that you went through all the crap but know that you will always be the catman to us fans and you've made a difference in our lives. God bless you peter & gigi

After reading this book, I was so sad to hear all the hard ship that Peter went through. But when I got to the end of the book, I felt so much joy for him. May God bless you Peter, your wife Gigi, and your entire family. Also, I hope and pray that one day I will be able to meet you. This was one of the best books I have read in a very long time. Being a die hard kiss fan since the 1970s, I felt like I was betrayed by the band for all the terrible things they did to Peter and the BS certain members of the band feed their fans. However, the key to success in this life is forgiveness. I hope Peter can one day forgive his band mates. I know he will as a good Christian that he is. Thanks Peter for all the good years. A must read book for any kiss fan.

I have read both Gene's and Ace's memoirs but this is by far my favorite. Peter's account comes from the heart and does not pull punches. His book shows examples of everyone being a hero and a villain including the author. I particularly enjoy the no holds barred reveal into the good, bad, and ugly happenings of the Kiss Circus, including tales from the Chicken Coup and the truth behind the Black Tear.
