This book is a story of one young man's tutalage under a crusty ranchero in 1870s Southern Texas. It is very much a western occupying many pages detailing how the cattle business was conducted on a large ranch. The social elements of this story are few and far between and ultimately are disappointing or depressing. The title "A Texas matchmaker" is deceiving as the story is more about life at an old ranch than any romantic escapades arranged by the patron of the ranch.
