A lively, sociable young woman, Lisa is adored my all in the neighbourhood, but when she starts an affair with a married man she falls from grace in the eyes of those around. Her actions finally have and consequences she cannot control. All in all, it gives the reader an interesting insight into the everyday lives of working class Londoners at the turn of the century. William Somerset Maugham CH ( 25 January 1874 - 16 December 1965) was a British playwright, novelist and short story writer.
