J.M. Barrie's Peter and Wendy was, by my recollection, a fun-filled romo through the Neverland, but upon reading it now I realized it is hardly that. Peter kills frequently and happily, Wendy is useless and Tinker Bell is murderous, but worse, Barrie's style succeeds in robbing an intelligent reader of any payoff or enjoyment through cheap stylistic choices, ghastly plot devices, and the like, while sometimes completely disregarding plot in order to get a few laughs. The book isn't worthless; it has a good message and invokes some nostalgia, but overall I wouldn't read it more than once. Good thing it was free!
