This electronic book is a compilation of materials, resources, and strategies that I received while taking a course on dyslexia taught by Stephanie Pratt at Frostburg State University. We will take a comprehensive overview of dyslexia, including the neurological basis of this reading disorder, the reading/spelling/language struggles a person with dyslexia may exhibit, how to recognize the signs of dyslexia, and teaching strategies to help the individual overcome these struggles. Strategies will be primarily based on the Orton-Gillingham method of reading/spelling instruction, which is a systematic, structured, multi-sensory method of teaching the sounds and spelling rules of the English language. Students will also learn multi-sensory strategies for phonological awareness and fluency training in line with the outcomes of the National Reading Panel.
I have also added some of my own research and media that I have found to be useful in understanding dyslexia, and more importantly, understanding how to help students with dyslexia. The purpose of this ebook is to open your mind to the world of dyslexia and hopefully become an educational advocate in the area of accommodating and remediating students who struggle with reading, writing and spelling.
