Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Darrow returns as Pierce Brown’s New York Times bestselling Red Rising series continues in the thrilling sequel to Dark Age.

The Reaper is a legend, more myth than man: the savior of worlds, the leader of the Rising, the breaker of chains.

But the Reaper is also Darrow, born of the red soil of Mars: a husband, a father, a friend.

Marooned far from home after a devastating defeat on the battlefields of Mercury, Darrow longs to return to his wife and sovereign, Virginia, to defend Mars from its bloodthirsty would-be conqueror Lysander.

Lysander longs to destroy the Rising and restore the supremacy of Gold, and will raze the worlds to realize his ambitions.

The worlds once needed the Reaper. But now they need Darrow, and Darrow needs the people he loves—Virginia, Cassius, Sevro—in order to defend the Republic.

So begins Darrow’s long voyage home, an interplanetary adventure where old friends will reunite, new alliances will be forged, and rivals will clash on the battlefield.

Because Eo’s dream is still alive—and after the dark age will come a new age: of light, of victory, of hope.

I haven’t loved reading a book like this in a long time. Brilliantly written and structured. Such highs and lows, such an incredible ride I wish it never ended. It made me want to start the series over, which I will while I endure the wait for the next book in the series. Incredible.
  • Betray the Betrayer of the Betrayal

Just as the title suggests it’s starting to get a bit silly. I love the characters and the writing is well done on the level of how it makes you feel as if you could be there. The descriptions used, the details, the dialogue all inspires emotion. But it all starts to become unraveled when you realize you are reading about these extremely experienced and literally hand crafted beings of battle coupled with the supposed greatest minds in the systems and yet they are constantly being duped by betrayal. It would be believable if said betrayal occurred due to an over reliance on honor but Piers let’s us know that honor is really a secondary value next to duty and furthering the goals of their house. So this continued blind spot of betrayal that is never learned from by the brightest minds of the society is glaring and serves as a huge distraction to the story. Piers has got to get away from using the same old tactics to bring drama to his story.

It’s hard to put into words how I feel about this book, or this series as a whole. This book in particular, has cemented this series as one of my favorites of all time, if not my absolute favorite. It is not without flaw, however. I felt the beginning had a Deus ex Machina element to it that just didn’t match the flow of this tetralogy. But despite any shortcomings this story may face, the rest makes up for it. The characters are intelligently written. They are believable. The scope of the worlds visited are vast and awe-inspiring. The sheer brutality of combat in this super-advanced civilization is breathtaking. It makes me afraid of what humans are capable of doing to each other. The wanton destruction is not merely glanced over, this series forces the reader to acknowledge the similarities between this fictional combat and combat we face in the modern age. That’s how I look at it, at least. This series is well worth the read, but it is not for the lighthearted.

The action, the character development is top notch. I don’t want it to end. The complex characters and the tough decisions they are forced to make have me thinking about these books long after I’m done reading.

These characters he’s developed are brilliant and beautiful. Sarcastic and funny and full of personality that leaves you wanting to be best friends with them all. Until they try to kill you… This book took a piece of my heart with it and I don’t think I’ll be ok. Lol. I feel Darrow when he said he hurts all over. The best writing The best characters The best series Just read it I can’t wait to read the next one! ⛓️🪓
