"Propulsive ... a dizzying Gothic whodunit."
New York Times Book Review

Bestselling author Riley Sager returns with a Gothic chiller about a young caregiver assigned to work for a woman accused of a Lizzie Borden-like massacre decades earlier.

At seventeen, Lenora Hope
Hung her sister with a rope

Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

Stabbed her father with a knife
Took her mother’s happy life

It’s now 1983, and home-health aide Kit McDeere arrives at a decaying Hope’s End to care for Lenora after her previous nurse fled in the middle of the night. In her seventies and confined to a wheelchair, Lenora was rendered mute by a series of strokes and can only communicate with Kit by tapping out sentences on an old typewriter. One night, Lenora uses it to make a tantalizing offer—I want to tell you everything.

“It wasn’t me,” Lenora said
But she’s the only one not dead

As Kit helps Lenora write about the events leading to the Hope family massacre, it becomes clear there’s more to the tale than people know. But when new details about her predecessor’s departure come to light, Kit starts to suspect Lenora might not be telling the complete truth—and that the seemingly harmless woman in her care could be far more dangerous than she first thought.

The Last One Left is a solid five star read in my opinion. This is the story of a caregiver named Kitt McDeere who is given one last chance by her agency after a tragedy occurred during a previous assignment . The only catch is that she will be caring for Lenora , an heiress who is infamous for killing her parents and sister. The previous nurse vanished the week before Kitt’s arrival. I won’t spoil this any further other than to say that The Last One Left hold the record for the most twists in a single Riley Sager novel. He remains one of my favorite thriller writers because I never know what to expect. I enjoy the twists and the element of surprise every single time.

Being new into reading in my spare time, I quite enjoyed this story and finished it in two days. I have come to enjoy the way Mr Sager tells the stories with their twists and turns all the way to the end

This book is written like a bad movie. The protagonist is horribly annoying. The ending is a mixture of predictable cliches and rushed, poorly thought-through plot line. Meh

Love can represent a lot of things to a lot of different people. This book has showed me what love can be in a million different lights, with several different perspectives, all of which are not wrong. Ask yourself, “what is love to you and at what length are you willing to save it?”
  • One succesful twist with 7 unnecessary ones

The story kept me engaged and the reveal of the big twist made me circle back and reread previous sections to find the overarching connections and subtle details I missed upon my first read. However, the numerous twists afterwards felt more like “attention grabbers” rather than twists with concrete reasoning and subtle hints to support them. But aside from that, I enjoyed the book and it’s what got me hooked to start reading again!

I’m being honest when I say this. I don’t remember the last time I read a book. I know I read one maybe two books in high school. But that was the last time My friends and I started a book club together and I really didn’t want to join because I never liked reading. I decided to give it a try. This is the book that they wanted to read. It was soo GOOD!!! The twists, the mystery, and theories were just amazing. I enjoyed this book. This author pulls you in. He makes you think. I’m so excited to keep on reading and ready to read his next book
