Description

Following the first three animated workbooks from By Inquisition (Organic Chemistry Concepts, Introductory Organic Mechanisms, and Organic Spectroscopy and Spectrometry), this is the first opportunity to introduce a major biomolecule type: sugars. Chapters are: (i) acetals and ketals; (ii) imines and enamines; (iii) monosaccharides: and, (iv) polysaccharides. Acetal, ketal, and hydrate formation covers chemistry associated with making and breaking anomeric linkages in sugars. Chapter (ii) discusses formation and hydrolyses of imines, enamines, and cyanohydrins so students have this background to understand degradation and homologation reactions in the following chapter on monosaccharides. Monosaccharides are probably covered more extensively than in most introductory organic chemistry textbooks. A premed student recently told me she completed two semesters of sophomore organic chemistry (not from me) without learning anything relevant to the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), and presumably to medical school too. This should not happen. Consequently my plan for this ebook module, and for ones following it, is chemistry associated with a major biomolecule class (here carbohydrates) should immediately precede discussion of that class. Thus, biomolecule chemistry is introduced in depth, and earlier than in most textbooks giving time to revisit it. This eworkbook is animated with videos, interleaved with problems to encourage students to understand by practice. The intention is students should watch videos as they are introduced in the book, then try to answer the problems covering theory and applications of each subject. All the videos linked to in this book are freely available on YouTube. They can be viewed within the etext protecting students from the temptation from distraction. Overall, this eworkbook is designed to challenge undergraduates so they should be able handle even difficult questions on exams and the final; excellent, books of easy problems are available from others elsewhere. Answers to all the problems are online at byinquisition.org. This book is offered at a reduced, introductory price for six months.
