Description

Breaking the French Barrier is part of the acclaimed language series that engages students of all levels, giving them all the tools needed to find success on the path to fluency.  First published in 1997, this series is now used throughout the world in high schools, colleges, and middle schools as well as by homeschool families and adult learners.
In this Level I book, ideal for beginning students, students are introduced to the present, passé composé, and imperfect tenses. They also learn commands as well as the future tense, and are introduced to sentence structure, object pronouns, and countless other “classics” of first-year study.  Hundreds of exercises reinforce the amazing explanations offered by some of the country’s leading language teachers.  The vocabulary presentation is stunning; pictures of each word accompany audio clips, and an amazing flashcard feature magically reinforces the learning. As a special feature, all even chapters feature a rip-roaring adventure series, reminiscent of old-fashioned radio, recorded by native speakers with sound effects and music. Comprehension questions follow each episode.
Vocabulary, grammar, and cultural information are presented in this new Breaking the Barrier iPad version in a way that can only be called revolutionary.  Combining the brilliant instructional features of the iPad with the winning approach developed by acclaimed teacher John Conner, dean of faculty at Groton School and former member of the AP Test Development Committee, this groundbreaking iPad version of the series is just what any language learner needs to excel.

There are a lot of small inaccuracies in this book that need to be revisited by the author.

Fantastic book. Started as a total beginner that knew “bonjour,” to someone that can speak after completing the series! Highlights: 1. Vocabulary: Each chapter has vocabulary flashcards that you can use to easily memorize the words related to the theme of the chapter. Know a word? click the green check mark. otherwise, you just toss it back in the pile and try again. 2. Grammar: Each chapter emphasizes a particular aspect of sentence structure. The start of the book begins with the present tense. Later chapters teach you the preterite (past tense) and the imperfect tense. 3. Cultural information: Each chapter focuses on a country that speaks french. There are also beautiful pictures and information about famous people from each country. A must purchase for $14.99!

For $14.99 this is by far the best deal around. Contrary to other reviews, all of the features work perfectly after the most recent update. If you are looking to become fluent, the grammar based approach really worked for me. I recently traveled to France and I couldn’t be happier.

I was hoping that the book has everything or at least most of the French text narrated with audio. Unfortunately, there is very little of audio. Most of the French words are not accompanied by sound. Unless they add more audio, not worth it. You need to go find every word in vocabulary. Customer service doesn't respond to emails. Overall disappointed, wish I could get a refund.

There are a few pages in lesson 5 that have some issues. When I try to type in the answers, the page format gets messed up. Hoping the rest of the book is okay. Its the best book I've found.

I have downloaded the SAMPLE and so far I've noticed that Page 20, answers 2 & 3 are flipped around. I can not continue with this book, no telling what else I could be learning incorrectly.
  • Flash cards still don't work!

Fix the flash cards and make it go a little faster, and I will give it five stars. Everything else is great, but I really wanted those flash cards to work!
