In 1965 the United States was fighting wars on two fronts. One was in Southeast Asia, the other int U.S. As apart of his "Great Society" President Johnson declared the nation could "afford guns and butter" and began a "war on poverty," although poverty rates had been dropping. Volunteers In Service To America (VISTA) joined the front line fightersin this domestic war. Lawrence takes the reader from volunteer community action in Florida to VISTA training at the University of New Mexico, and on to Arizona. Battles were won, but the war was lost.
