A BuzzFeed Best Summer Read of 2021

When a fake relationship between scientists meets the irresistible force of attraction, it throws one woman's carefully calculated theories on love into chaos.

As a third-year Ph.D. candidate, Olive Smith doesn't believe in lasting romantic relationships—but her best friend does, and that's what got her into this situation. Convincing Anh that Olive is dating and well on her way to a happily ever after was always going to take more than hand-wavy Jedi mind tricks: Scientists require proof. So, like any self-respecting biologist, Olive panics and kisses the first man she sees.

That man is none other than Adam Carlsen, a young hotshot professor—and well-known ass. Which is why Olive is positively floored when Stanford's reigning lab tyrant agrees to keep her charade a secret and be her fake boyfriend. But when a big science conference goes haywire, putting Olive's career on the Bunsen burner, Adam surprises her again with his unyielding support and even more unyielding...six-pack abs.

Suddenly their little experiment feels dangerously close to combustion. And Olive discovers that the only thing more complicated than a hypothesis on love is putting her own heart under the microscope.

Some books just shouldn’t end. That was fantastic. Sugar and spice and everything. Chefs kiss.

I was intrigued at first, but the plot is just truly not believable. It’s soooo many chapters of the main character having a major problem that could be solved with a 5 minute conversation, which I find exhausting.
  • It’s horrible im saying an advice if you want to listen this gas a lot kiss words

I loved this book! The love story was juicy, but very slow and deliberate. The ending was somewhat predictable but better than I had hoped! I read the entire book in a day. It had me captive.

there are not enough STEM themed rom coms in the world and im grateful for this book bringing us a great one!! I feel like the author was a bit repetitive when describing how tall Adam’s character was but other than this minor detail, I loved it!
  • One of my favorites!

This book was so clever, funny, and precious from beginning to end. The people who are iffy about the age gap are obviously YOUNG because honey, Olive was mid twenties, it’s not weird or creepy. Grow up. Speaking of Olive, she was such a refreshing, relatable protagonist and I loved getting to know her. Ali Hazelwood is officially my favorite author!!

The learned helplessness of Olivia was a little cumbersome at times, but I loved the story overall. I do appreciate the story arc allowing Olivia to grow over time, but I really hate when characters get walked all over. That’s just my personal ick.
  • Weird age-gap?

For me the 10ish yea age gap was a little more than I expected. I honestly thought in some scenes it was a little creepy- that’s the only reason I didn’t rate it all five stars, good book in general though.
