Description

A century-old mystery—and a desperate battle to survive—unfold in this standalone thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of Dark Matter and Recursion.

On Christmas Day in 1893, every man, woman, and child in a remote mining town disappeared, belongings forsaken, meals left to freeze in vacant cabins, and not a single bone found.

Now, journalist Abigail Foster and her historian father have set out to explore the long-abandoned town and learn what happened. With them are two backcountry guides—along with a psychic and a paranormal photographer who are there to investigate rumors that the town is haunted.

But Abigail and her companions are about to learn that the town’s ghosts are the least of their worries. Twenty miles from civilization, with a blizzard bearing down, they realize they are not alone.

The ordeal that follows will test this small team past the breaking point as they battle the elements and human foes alike—and discover that the town’s secrets still have the power to kill.

Part journey into old-West history, part nail-biting survival thriller, Abandon is a bloody, darkly surprising tale as only Blake Crouch could deliver.

Yes, everyone in the reviews is correct. It is different from his other newer stuff like Dark Matter and Recursion but it was still amazing. I don’t know why it’s getting hate but I loved the back and forth between time frames and both stories colliding. Must read in my mind.

Let me start by saying I normally LOVE Blake’s books. In fact I’m always a pre-order fan ever since the first read. But this wasn’t just a departure. It was just like it was written by someone entirely different. I can appreciate change and different stories. But I just could not get into this one at all.

Couldn’t finish it, and I loved Wayward Pines, Dark Matter, Recursion, and Upgrade. Go read all of those if you haven’t and skip this book.

Dark Matter by the same author is one of my favorite books. I’ve read it maybe 8 times. Hard to believe this is the same author. This is torture to get through. The back and forth timelines are tedious with too many characters, none of which I care about. Nothing is happening thus far. It’s like an old book the author wrote a long time ago and his publisher insisted this should be published. If that is the case or whatever, whoever idea this was too publish should be fired, this is not doing the author any favors to his career. But seriously go read Dark Matter.
  • Confusing, dark, depressing.

I couldn’t find a good reason to like this book. Ughhh.
  • Twisted and dark

Only a dark mind could write something this twisted. Plenty of graphic violence, including a preacher who becomes a mass murderer, then brainwashes a 6-year old girl into thinking God wants her to be a serial killer.
