Description

Jenny Blake has a theory about life: big decisions often don't amount to much, but little decisions sometimes transform everything. Her theory proves true the summer of 1955, when 14-year-old Jenny makes the decision to pick up a penny imbedded in asphalt, and consequently ends up stopping a robbery, getting a job, and meeting a friend who changes her life forever.
Jenny and Miss Shaw form a friendship that dares both of them to confront secrets in their pasts--secrets that threaten to destroy them. Jenny helps Miss Shaw open up to the community around her, while Miss Shaw teaches Jenny to meet even life's most painful challenges with confidence and faith. This unexpected relationship transforms both characters in ways neither could have anticipated, and the ripple effect that begins in the summer of the penny goes on to bring new life to the people around them, showing how God works in the smallest details. Even in something as small as a penny.

I could not stop reading this book until I finished it -- that was last fall. I think I will read it again this year. I hope Joyce and Deborah will do another book like it. I would buy it, Dee
  • This book should be religious fiction.

This story is rich and real. It inspires one to check themselves. If the main character can muster the strength to go forward and stand up to so many obstacles, take chances, and forgive such horrendous wrongs, we ought to follow that leadership. It just may be what it keeping us from the purpose God has for our lives. Great text for book club or study group.

This story was interesting, but the ending was so unsatisfying and anticlimactic. I didn't expect the religious theme either.

The beginning is sort of slow and I had a difficult time "getting into it." It's a very easy read with good biblical lessons of forgiveness, faithfulness, and hope. Character development is great. Overall, not something I'd read again. Glad it was only 2.99.
