    What is the call of the wild? It is certainly not the electronic ring of the 21st century phone nor scheduled sound of the alarm clock on the bedroom side table. Jack London reminds us of the primordial voice buried within the deepest recesses of the psyche; and in this instance, we learn of it from a dog from the early 1900’s. Buck is a mixed breed of St. Bernard and Scottish Shepherd who falls victim to the dog trade market. He is first stolen from his home and then sold to couriers to aid men in search of gold in the Klondike region of Canada. The reader is introduced to a harsh way of living during this time- violent interactions between man and animal, but even more vicious environmental conditions. Everything Buck experiences is necessary in order for him to reach his pinnacle of bestial grandeur and potential. Fighting, leading, hunting, loving and living all prepare Buck for the call - an intangible pull towards the unknown; living and dying on one’s own terms. Throughout the book, the call continuously pulls him forward until he answers it wholeheartedly and without restraint - the call of the wild. We should all be so lucky to answer our call - that place that takes us into unfamiliar territory and awakens our inner beast, that stimulates our senses and merges us into our environment, that place that challenges us and forces us to grow - to meet our true potential.

    I’m a cat person and I HATE dogs so I didn’t really like this book but I gave it a 5 stars because if I were a dog person I would like this. If you’re a dog person, READ IT NOW. If you’re a freak like me, (cat person) don’t read it. Nothin special

Loyal to his new master, lured into the wolf pack, shrewd leader and sire of a breed of wolves that roamed the forests of the Yukon. A well written story.

    I really don’t like this book. It was sad but hard to read. And not because it’s sad. Because it takes forever to make it to the climax. I guess recommend.
