Description

“Action, drama, desire, revenge: Shadow Music includes all the necessary ingredients for romantics to plunge into the moors, mountains and magical myth of medieval Scotland.”—The Roanoke Times

Prized for her exquisite beauty, Princess Gabrielle of St. Biel, the daughter of one of England’s most influential barons, is a perfect bargaining chip for a king who needs peace in the Highlands: King John has arranged Gabrielle’s marriage to a good and gentle laird. But this marriage will never take place.

Upon her arrival in Scotland, Gabrielle is immediately entangled in Highland intrigue, as a battle royal flares between enemies old and new. For two sadistic noblemen, underestimating Gabrielle’s bravery and prowess may prove fatal. Colm MacHugh, the most feared man in Scotland, makes no such mistakes about the captivating princess. Under his penetrating gaze, neither Gabrielle’s body nor her heart is safe.

“No one does historical romance better than Garwood. . . . Gabrielle is an enchanting heroine.”—The State (Columbia, S.C.)

“A compelling historical romance.”—Publishers Weekly

I’ve been a die-hard Garwood fan for a long time, particularly for her historical romances. I’m pretty sure this one is my least favorite. It’s not that the story was terrible, but it was missing the hallmarks I look for in this author’s novels. The romance was slim-to-nil. They literally only kissed for the first 300+ pages. It also wasn’t as touching or humorous. It just didn’t emotionally engage me with the characters like her other books.

I read Shadow Music right after the Secret and Ransom. You could say these Highlanders captured my heart! I don’t know why so many people disliked this book. It was great. I read the whole book in a day. There are some differences compared to the first two. Gabrielle is her own person, not a replica of Judith or Gillian. I highly recommend this book.

I am an avid lover of everything Highlander. My fav of the three is The Secret. But also enjoyed Ransom very much, all the adventure was riveting! There were at least a couple battles that I enjoyed in Shadow Music. Loved the Royal Guards—their arrogant conceit matched that of the Highlanders and was quite refreshing. In Shadow Music the romance was definitely missing. If it had the yumminess of Iain and Judith of The Secret I would re-read and re-read over and over and over again. But sadly it’s a one-and-done book. PUNYIAM62

No characterization, same plot as one of her other books (Castles). I absolutely adore the bride, the wedding, and the secret, and this was just terrible in comparison.
