“Lapena is a master of manipulation.” —USA Today

The new unputdownable novel from the “queen of the one-sit read,” and New York Times bestselling author of The Couple Next Door

Nothing ever happens in sleepy little Fairhill, Vermont. But this morning that will change. And one innocent question could be deadly. What have you done?

The teenagers get their kicks telling ghost stories in the old graveyard. The parents trust their kids will arrive home safe from school. Everyone knows everyone. Curtains rarely twitch. Front doors are left unlocked.

But Diana Brewer isn’t lying safely in her bed where she belongs. Instead she lies in a hayfield, circled by vultures, discovered by a local farmer.

How quickly a girl becomes a ghost. How quickly a town of friendly, familiar faces becomes a town of suspects, a place of fear and paranoia.

Someone in Fairhill did this. Everyone wants answers.

Someone killed the lovely and beautiful Diane, a young woman still enjoying her career HS years with the 3 other people in her life she’s been so close with, Evan, Riley and her bf Cameron. But when she is found naked with no clothes or cell phone in a field the small town is frantic trying to find out who killed such. A good girl who had such a promising future ahead of her and why. A number of questions about their last night together why Cameron initially lies to the police about what transpired and why did he kill her m? What was his motive or reason? Then they find out the gym and track coach had been accused of acting inappropriately with Diane. Diane reported him to the principal who didn’t believe her and took the coaches word for the truth not following protocol by failing to find the report contrary to what he believed Then there’s a guy who’s been staking her at work making her feel super uncomfortable and he will not have any other cashier wait on bin and he is leering at her constantly and he has worried he r so much she is escorted to her car each night her shift ends. Did he find her address and finally get to do to her whatever it was his sick mind was entertaining. And lastly there is a plethora of questions and unsolved answers with the mystery of why was she left in that field where were her belongings. When Rikey texts her best friends cellphone out of missing her and deeply distraught with the realization of living without her for the rest of her and she was shocked and traumatized when a text came back. Reporting this new development to the police again a new query of amped up pressure and questioning and searches go on and an unexpected result will lead to a very unlikely and devastating outcome for the solved crime and the murderer who took Diane’s life for such a trivial and devastating reason. This book has so many twist turns and pivots it’s a dizzying unstoppable force that can’t be put down until every tiny insinuation of the answers being sought can be found when questioning one person but it will be then tbd other person has yet another disconcerting truth they’d left out to their meeting with police and they are now back in the spotlight and around and around the investigators go chasing their tails until finally their no nonsense approach and their insistence on investigation even the tiniest things that they know may lead to a larger more substantial place in which they can begin to connect the dots finally beginning to make some good progress and they will learn these cases are never tied up tightly and wrapped beautifully with a bow they also know that as long as they put in the effort and their acute instinct in their partnership they will never regret any of it. It’s been a great career albeit a very dangerous one. Excellent work with the characters complexities individuality and dynamic attentive and intelligent personality and characteristics that make them so much more interesting and the investment into them and their welfare at concussion of the well executed published work. For all who love this specific genre I and even those who aren’t super fans bud don’t mind a captivating and carefully woven web that has a delicious reveal at the end much tk my utter delight

I couldn’t stop reading this book. I loved how you thought it was one person then the next but never once thought it was who it was.
  • Not up to the usual standard

Having read every Shari Lapena book, this one just lacks the usual excitement and intrigue of her writing. The plot is slow, and the ending is rushed. The big “twist” is undermined by the possibilities of modern technology and DNA evidence. All in all the story and crime of this book feel very sloppily conceived compared the usual standard.

This was a great book. It had me guessing until the very end. A superb job by the writer. I liked the point of view from the dead victim. This is a fast paced book with lots of twists and turns.

Long build up and then a very quick ending with no resolution for Diana finding her way to cross over.

It was ok. Not that great of characters and the ending was abrupt. More of a young adult mystery than for older folks.
