“Even after witnessing many last breaths, I still have a moment after when I think to myself, a life has just ended. Realizing just how big that really is I am reminded again what an honor it is to be invited to be present for it. I hope I never stop being affected by that. This work is difficult, but it is beautiful.” Author unknown.
Those words written above are not just words. They express the true meaning of Hospice care. Is there anything more meaningful than being present at the end of someone’s life? To me, the end of life is just as important and meaningful as the beginning. To be present, offering comfort to the dying patient and to their loved ones, fills my heart with gratitude and pride. To be present, to offer comfort, knowledge and education to families on what to expect and to let them know it’s okay to let their loved ones go is the best and most important job I have ever had. If Hospice nursing had been my first job, I never would have worked any other job in my career.
This booklet is written to help caregivers, family, and friends to understand and not be afraid of what’s happening at the end of someone’s life. It is packed with important and powerful information to help you understand and provide the best possible care for your loved one.
