Description

In the first in a dazzling new series, New York Times bestselling author Lorraine Heath introduces the Hellions of Havisham—three charismatic rogues destined to lose their hearts . . .

After six unsuccessful Seasons, Miss Minerva Dodger chooses spinsterhood over fortune-hungry suitors. But thanks to the Nightingale Club, she can at least enjoy one night of pleasure. At that notorious establishment, ladies don masks before choosing a lover. The sinfully handsome Duke of Ashebury is more than willing to satisfy the secretive lady's desires—and draws Minerva into an exquisite, increasingly intimate affair.

A man of remarkable talents, Ashe soon deduces that his bedmate is the unconventional Miss Dodger. Intrigued by her wit and daring, he sets out to woo her in earnest. Yet Minerva refuses to trust him. How to court a woman he has already thoroughly seduced? And how to prove that the passion unleashed in darkness is only the beginning of a lifetime's pleasure . . . ?

The prologue is so interesting as we get a sense of how these boys came into each others' lives, that it made me want to start the series. I was expecting so much from the first chapter, and unfortunately, it fell flat. The heroine is very unlikeable. She prides herself in being so smart and daring and yet she vacillates back and forth for half the book about taking what she wants. She complains so much about being undesirable even though there is someone proving to her otherwise that she becomes ugly to read.  In the last few chapters of the book, I wanted to read a whole other story about the interesting Duke of Asheby and for him to marry any other random lady with a dowry because this woman was so very taxing.

This book revealed the cleverness, honesty, pride, and insecurities of the characters. It was entertaining. I feel it could have had a little more substance to the story

I enjoyed the book. Read it for the first time in 2015 and read it again in 2019. I don’t usually re-read books unless it’s been five or more years between readings. The fact that I read it again, speaks volumes about the writing and the characters. Minerva is not shallow; she’s insecure, pragmatic and used to being viewed as a bank account (rather than a human being) by single men, who do appear to be quite shallow. I recommend it. Look forward to reading about Edward.
  • Shallow.

Minerva is a shallow jerk who, by her own assessment, looks like a Neanderthal. She is supposedly “kind” yet routinely thinks of no one else but herself and her own wants and feelings. And oh good grief she never missed a chance to lecture whoever was unfortunate to be within hearing distance about how magnificent and brilliant women are. She has so much empathy/sympathy for Ashebury that she can’t even be bothered to communicate with him and makes every assumption possible due to her own inferiority complex. What a pompous, whiny, judgey twit. Ugh.
  • Fabulous novel!!!

I loved everything about this book, the characters all were fantastic. I find Minerva so relatable. I enjoyed the mention of the Duke & Duchess of Avendale. I can't wait for the next book in this series.
