Description

When you’ve been accused of kidnapping an emperor, and every enforcer in the city wants your head, it’s hard to prove yourself an honorable person and even harder to earn an imperial pardon.

That doesn’t keep Amaranthe Lokdon and her team of outlaws from trying. When athletes start disappearing from the Imperial Games, they may finally have an opportunity to show the emperor that they’re on his side. If she and her comrades can get to the bottom of such a public mystery, they’re sure to get the credit.

But plans go awry when Amaranthe’s own men start plotting against each other, the new ally she’d hoped to acquire tries to turn her in, and her best fighter—and closest friend—disappears.

Maybe getting involved wasn’t such a good idea after all…

Deadly Games is approximately 110,000 words. It is the third book in The Emperor's Edge series.

I didn’t like this book as much as its predecessors, and agree with others that the plot is starting to feel formulaic and young adult. It could also use a bit more proofreading. The author demonstrates a lack of understanding of context and nuance when it comes to Amaranthe’s gendered comments and their implications, and how they perpetuate and reinforce the patriarchal culture that’s made it difficult for her to thrive. There were a number of oversights and contradictions. Amaranthe and Maldynado act like their conversation on Mancrest and the Gazette in book 2 never happened. Even though old Wholt accused her of being a grandmother in book 1 for mothering him, she thinks she’s not old enough to mother these men. For all their brilliance no one has recommended Akstyr wear a glove to cover his brand. Basilard forgot about Maldynado telling him about Deret. They’re also perfectly fine with poisoning the lake. Amaranthe also wonders why she misses Sicarius even though she already confessed that she loves him in book 2. Amaranthe somehow attended the imperial games and had dinner in the imperial gardens without any issues despite her bounty. Vocab list this time: legerdemain instead of sleight of hand, stevedore instead of dockworker, imprecations instead of curses, palavering instead of chatting, subaqueous instead of underwater.

I love this series. It has strong female protagonists and antagonists and is about more than it seems. The characters have depth and are constantly changing and if I'm honest I've read this too many time!! Lindsay Buroker is an amazing author and I hope she keeps writing
