Description

His mother was one of the most powerful wizards in the Nurian Empire until she abandoned her people to become a notorious pirate. That choice doomed the family she left behind to a life of disgrace.

Yanko White Fox doesn’t remember his mother, but as the only gifted child in the family, he is expected to erase the mark she left on them all. With an affinity for earth magic and communicating with animals, he’s not the most natural candidate to become a warrior mage, but it’s the only sure route back into the Great Chief’s good graces. He has resigned himself to training for that destiny, whether it matches his passions or not.

Long before he’s ready for his first battle, insurrection comes to his distant corner of the empire. Rebels take over the salt mine his family manages and slay the only relative who ever supported Yanko. On the heels of the tragedy, a courier brings a message from the Great Chief’s son. Whether he is prepared or not, Yanko must undertake a quest, one that could save millions of lives… or fail utterly, leaving him dead, his family forgotten, and his people the victims of starvation and endless war.

I know I will enjoy a story by Lindsay Buroker, and this one didn’t disappoint me. The author creates believable characters in fantastic situations which take place in fully developed alternative worlds.

I was given a review copy of this book for my honest opinion. I love that this new series is bringing together a large number of my favorite characters from the Emperor's Edge series as well as the Swords and Salt Collection. It had been awhile since I read both series and so it took me a bit for some reason to place Akstyr. The others I remembered easily so how could I have forgotten the unorthodox, sarcastic, gangly, and clueless Akstyr? There are some new characters as well. My favorite is Kei. Worth reading just to meet this fun new character. Now since I have been given this venue to share my opinion I am going to broaden the venue to assume that it also is here to serve my desires. So... 1) How about bringing us some Ridge, Sardelle, Tolemek and Cas. They would be great treasure hunters! 2) I really want to meet Yanko's infamous warrior mage turned pirate mother. That should prove interesting. 3) Please don't retire my favorite assassin! Back to the book review... This is pure fantasy but of the best kind. The scrapes these characters get into and out of go way beyond plausibility. It's fantasy! It is really fun fantasy though, of the type that would make an incredible action movie if millions were available to make it just right. Lindsay...you are an incredible self-published author. You ready for Hollywood? I loved this book and am looking forward to the rest in the series.

I was given a review copy for my honest opinion. I'm a huge fan of Lindsay Buroker's and the first installment of her new series, Chains of Honor, did not disappoint! The new series returns her devoted fans to the much-loved Emperor's Edge world, but it is not required (although very much recommended) reading to enjoy this new series. I was so excited that Lindsay did what she does best in Warrior Mage. We have a group of misfits thrown together with a somewhat common goal to reach. Humor, mayhem, and friendships ensue. Almost non-stop action leads Yanko and friends into this exciting start of their treasure-seeking adventure!
