The last thing Shayla Callaway was looking for was trouble. After years of medical school, she is months away from finishing her residency when a stint with a research team lands her in the middle of a game of drugs and money, and the only person who can help her is a burned out ex-soldier with a hot body and a cocky attitude.

"I was enthralled and drawn into the personal struggles of Shayla and Reid as they figure out what they both need and want out of life. Another awesome book in this most wonderful series on the dynamic family, The Callaways. A must read for everyone either as part of the series you adore or a stand-alone story." Charlene

"Barbara gives us a fantastically written story of love and family. I think that's what I love about this series so much is the family values and closeness that is written wonderfully within each individual story." Yvonne - Goodreads

  • a book that created a large emotional reaction from me

Going into this story, I was curious about the direction that this would go: Shayla Callaway is a doctor and has just returned from Colombia where she was treating patients. Unfortunately, a massacre of the people she was helping occurred, and she was able to just get out. Her partner, also a doctor, was not so fortunate. So Shayla arrives back home with full-fledged PTSD and panic attacks, and a mission to get something from her colleague’s desk to give to his twin, Reid, without involving the police. Reid is retired military, a bit rough and ready with a long-term estrangement from his twin because of a woman (aren’t those issues always women?) and her choices. So, a suspenseful plot that brings in danger from the ‘item’ to be found, questions about Reid’s willingness to help and Shayla’s overall ability to hold it together when things get stressful. Here is where I sort of lost my mind: Shayla is full on PTSD and Reid has only to say her name and snap her out of the panic, so much so that she is all chirpy and normal again. Yes, it is fiction, but No. Panic attacks and other PTSD symptoms are not simply cured by hot guy saying your name. Oh – and Reid’s frustration with his brother and the years not speaking is simply erased when he finds a sexy woman? Would that all life’s troubles were that easily solved. This book danced between utterly frustrating with the complete lack of realism to intriguing as both Shayla and Reid dance about their attraction. Or dance with it. Like the last title, the sexual content is ramped up significantly as compared to the first four novels, and at times it almost felt as if it was the third element in the story, with the ‘quest’ to solve the mystery Robert unearthed fell to the wayside. Not my favorite, but certainly a book that created a large emotional reaction from me, I’m curious to see what the next mysterious element, and couple, will be in the offing. I received an eBook copy of the title from the author for purpose of a Novel Publicity Tour event. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Such a wonderful story! Read it all in one sitting. Looking forward to Colton's story and unraveling the mystery surrounding the grandmother. Can't wait until September!
